The stars of the hockey-themed drama "Heated Rivalry" are set to make waves on U.S. late-night television this month, marking a significant milestone for this Canadian series as it gains traction on the international stage.
Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, who portray rival professional hockey players in this adaptation of Rachel Reid's popular novel, will be featured on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night With Seth Meyers later this month. This is an exciting first for the cast, as they make their debut on late-night shows, having originally brought the story to life for Bell Media’s Crave.
Williams, stepping into the role of Canadian forward Shane Hollander, is slated to chat with Fallon on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Storrie, who plays the Russian sniper Ilya Rozanov, will grace the stage of Late Night with Seth Meyers on Monday, January 12.
These late-night appearances highlight the swift ascent of the six-episode series, which draws inspiration from Reid's 2019 novel within her "Game Changers" book series. Written by the talented author from Nova Scotia, the narrative revolves around two elite hockey players whose intense rivalry on the rink evolves into a deeply hidden, long-term romantic relationship as their careers progress.
Directed by Jacob Tierney, hailing from Montreal, the show premiered during the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States and has quickly become one of Canada’s most talked-about original productions.
According to Williams in a recent interview with CNN, "The spice definitely gets people in, or kinda piques their interest, but I do think they stay for just the tender romance at the centre." He elaborated that the series presents a unique dynamic, filled with longing, where both men are compelled to communicate in ways that are often unprecedented in their world.
What makes this series particularly noteworthy is its bold portrayal of a queer love story within the traditionally masculine realm of professional hockey. In a discussion on Andy Cohen Live, Williams shared that they receive heartfelt, anonymous messages from professional athletes who are still navigating their identities privately. He explained, "They’re reaching out to (Reid), our author, who will then kind of relay these lovely anonymous emails. Sometimes they’re just reaching out privately through Instagram, and those ones are the ones that really just kind of hit you and go, ‘Oh, so this is a fun show, and it’s celebratory, but also sometimes it’s just hitting people right in the nerve.’"
For both Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie, this series marks their most prominent roles to date. Williams has previously appeared in the series Tracker and in the Hallmark holiday movie All I Need for Christmas (2024). Storrie has made appearances in smaller roles in Joker: Folie à Deux and the 2023 miniseries Tiny Beautiful Things.
Adding to the excitement, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Williams and Storrie are scheduled to present at the 2026 Golden Globe Awards this Sunday.
The Canadian production has captivated a growing audience beyond its borders, with HBO Max acquiring the series for viewers in the United States and Australia, while Sky will broadcast it in New Zealand, and Movistar Plus+ plans to introduce it to Spain. Notably, "Heated Rivalry" has already been renewed for a second season.
