"I've always wanted to play schoolboy rugby. Our school is very big, and our students would come to the game and support. It wasn't always union after school; I was weighing up my options. But I'm loving league at the moment," he said.
This passion and talent caught the eye of the Cowboys, who recruited him into their system. In just four months, he has impressed coaches with his back-line abilities, transitioning from halfback to fullback seamlessly.
"I thought I was going to be in the halves, but they want me as a fullback, and I'm glad they did because I enjoy that position," Mesritz explained.
His journey to the Under-19s Origin match is a testament to his hard work and the support of those around him. He will take to the field on Thursday, representing the Blues and his family, who have been instrumental in his success.
"They've been massive and sacrificed a lot to get me up to school, which was probably the biggest change of my life, but for the better. They've done everything," he said of his parents and older brother.
