EPF Withdrawal Made Easy: UPI Access & Faster Payouts (2026)

The Labour Ministry is reportedly developing a system that will enable eight crore EPFO members to directly withdraw their funds using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This initiative aims to streamline the withdrawal process, enhance service efficiency, and provide quicker access to funds. The project, targeted for rollout by April 2026, will allow members to transfer a portion of their EPF funds directly into their bank accounts via UPI. This method will simplify the withdrawal process and offer members more flexibility in managing their funds. The EPFO is currently working on resolving software glitches to ensure a seamless experience for members. Under the auto-settlement mode, withdrawal claims are processed electronically within three days, and the limit has been increased to ₹5 lakh. This improvement will benefit a large number of EPFO members who can now access their EPF money for various purposes, including illness, education, marriage, and housing, within a shorter timeframe. However, the EPFO cannot directly allow withdrawals due to the lack of banking licenses. The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) approved simplifications and liberalized partial withdrawals in October 2025, allowing users to withdraw up to 100% of their eligible funds. These changes aim to enhance the ease of living for EPF members and provide them with more control over their financial resources.
