A Devon family's camping trip took an unexpected turn when they encountered a 'dust devil' on Dartmoor, an event that left them with a terrifying story to tell. The Lodge family, from Tiverton, had a weekend of camping cut short by a whirlwind that ripped through their tent, scattering equipment and causing significant damage. Kusalarāja Lodge, an ordained Buddhist, described the experience as both strange and terrifying. He was meditating outside the tent when the sky suddenly darkened, signaling the impending arrival of the dust devil.
The sudden increase in wind speed and the presence of dust and debris were the first signs of the vortex. Mr. Lodge noted that the wind's intensity was so extreme that it initially made him believe a storm was approaching. However, the surrounding landscape remained calm, emphasizing the localized nature of the event.
The tent was torn in two, with one half being completely ripped away along the joining seam. The detached section of the tent was carried an estimated 300m to 500m through the air, causing multiple tent pegs to bend and a thick wooden pole from their windbreak to snap in half. The camping cooker was lifted and thrown across a field, where it was extensively damaged.
Despite the significant damage, no one in the Lodge family was hurt. The event affected only a narrow path through the campsite, and other campers immediately came to assist them. The surrounding campsite did not appear to have experienced any damage, reinforcing the highly localized nature of the vortex.
The Lodge family, who had intended to camp for the entire weekend, had to cut their trip short due to the damage. However, they have vowed to return to camping, determined to overcome the challenges posed by this unusual weather phenomenon.
