Her father, Ruben Torres Maldonado, was detained by ICE while she was home from the hospital, battling cancer. Ofelia's video plea for her father's release went viral, highlighting the plight of immigrant families facing deportation. Despite her father's release on a $2,000 bond, the family's struggle continued. A Chicago judge recently ruled that Ruben's deportation would negatively impact his U.S. citizen children, granting him the right to cancel removal and potentially obtain permanent residence and citizenship. Ofelia's lawyer, Kalman Resnick, praised her courage, saying, 'Ofelia's bravery in the face of ICE's detention and threatened deportation of her father will forever be a model for us all.'
